President's Day

Abraham Lincoln:
 
A man, son, father, husband, believer, and President.
 
The most powerful tribute one can give is to share a man’s words with generations not yet born.  
 
Lincoln’s words live on today for their truth and wisdom.    The nature and character of God, His Light, His Love shines through President’s Lincoln’s spoken words.
 
Abraham Lincoln was a man of God.  He read his Bible daily.  The Bible, worn and frayed with daily cares and struggles, was his church.  History judges Lincoln not by military conquests or popular sentiments, for the Civil War remains our nation’s bloodiest conflict, and President Lincoln’s critics were countless and relentless in their fury.  In the midst of private and public challenges that began with the premature deaths of his mother, brother, sister and three young sons, President Lincoln was a man acquainted with grief and sorrows, yet he embodied the living hope of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Faith sustained him when all else failed—for he never forgot that “in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us”  (Romans 8:37).

Lincoln’s life reflects truth and wisdom in the words he uttered and the choices he made.  His character was shaped and chiseled on his face and in his heart by adversity.  Lincoln never accepted defeat because He believed:  “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).
 
Here are a few quotes from President Lincoln that speak truth and wisdom for the ages: 
My concern is not whether God is on our side, my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.
 
When I do good, I feel good.  When I do bad, I feel bad.  That’s my religion.
 
I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how a man could look up into the heavens and say there is no God.
 
Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm.
 
I would rather be a little nobody, then to be a evil somebody.
 
Those who look for the bad in people will surely find it.
 
Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves.
 
America will never be destroyed from the outside.  If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.
 
I’m a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn’t have the heart to let him down.
 
Books serve to show a man that those original thoughts of his aren’t very new after all.
 
Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?
 
I don’t like that man.  I must get to know him better.
 
When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.
 
Whatever you are, be a good one.
 
Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be….
 
I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true.  I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live up to what light I have.
 
I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go.  My own wisdom and that of all about me seemed insufficient for that day.
 
Character is like a tree and reputation its shadow.  The shadow is what we think it is and the tree is the real thing.
 
The best way to predict your future is to create it.
 
Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.
 
We are not enemies, but friends.  We must not be enemies.  Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.  The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

​There are no accidents in my philosophy. Every effect must have its cause. The past is the cause of the present, and the present will be the cause of the future. All these are links in the endless chain stretching from the finite to the infinite. 

As we remember and rejoice in the blessings of President Abraham Lincoln’s words, works and wisdom, may his godly example continue to shape us and our destiny as Americans.  Our nation must continue to be a beacon of light to the world for the glory of God’s name.   Our heritage is our future, if we act with God’s truth and righteousness in our hearts and minds.  Nothing is impossible with God.
