Palm Sunday is the day we come together as believers to remember the triumphant entrance of our Lord, Jesus of Nazareth, as He rode into the City of Jerusalem on a young colt of a donkey. All the people of Jerusalem sang and shouted as Jesus Christ fulfilled the prophecy spoken by the prophet Zechariah 500 years prior:
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly, and sitting on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.”
-Zechariah 9:9
The multitudes laid their clothes and others cut branches from the trees and spread them before our Lord as He came into the City of Jerusalem. Many churches share palm branches with their congregations on Palm Sunday to welcome the triumphant entrance of our Lord Jesus Christ into our lives and turn away from sin.
Crying out, the multitudes of people sang over 2,000 years ago:
Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is He who comes in the
Name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the Highest!
-Matthew 21:4-9
Jesus of Nazareth was from the bloodline of King David through His father, Joseph. He would later be recognized by Christians and Messianic Jews as the One the Old Testament revealed would bring salvation and redeem the world from sin. Sadly, many of the people who celebrated Jesus Christ as their King as he rode into the city of Jerusalem would be the very persons crying out to crucify him before Pontius Pilate.
May we as a nation of Americans celebrate King Jesus as Lord and Savior of our hearts and souls. We need the strength and healing of God in the righteous person of Jesus Christ to bring us and the world through this terrible plague and into the triumphant procession and celebration of the Risen Christ. He paid the price of sin with His blood, and God promises all the covenant of eternal life through our faith in His Son. God gives us His Presence and His Healing when we rest before in Him in the stillness of prayer and trust God to bring us peace in the midst of suffering.
God is the One who never forsakes nor fails us. God’s covenant of life stands as a promise to all who chooses to believe in Christ.
Let us come together and pray for God’s mercy and His healing over our land, our nation and the whole earth. May we turn to our Lord for peace, obey God’s commandments and praise His Holy Name from sea to shining sea, nation to nation. May the light of our faith in Christ shine forth into the darkness through our prayers, our poetry, our praises, our songs and our service to others bringing glory to God the Father and our Lord.
The poem “Jesus Comes” is a gift to our King.
Jesus Comes
Go fetch a young colt and donkey
From the place where they are tied.
Your King, the Lord of Heavens,
Comes meekly, prepared to ride.
Wave your many branches.
Bow your heads in prayers and praise.
Your King, the Lord of Heavens,
Comes full of God’s glory and grace.
Behold Daughter of Zion,
Your King is drawing near.
Prepare your hearts for Heaven
He sees our motives there.
Remove the blindness from our eyes.
See the world as it truly is.
Your King, the Lord of Heavens, rides
to set the captives free.
Sing Your praises boldly.
Repent of the sins we do.
Your King, the Lord of Heavens, rides
full of mercy, grace and truth.
Hosanna in the Highest,
To our Lord and King.
Sing His Praises boldly,
Salvation comes by Him.
